UNIST rowing club has won the first place at the 2018 Busan Metropolitan City Mayor Cup National Rowing Competition, ended up winning the overall championship at the event for the third consecutive year.

Attended by 500 amateur athletes and student-athletes from 10 universities throughout the nation, the event took place from June 2nd to 3rd near APEC Naru Park in Busan.

In this two-day long rowing competition, UNIST was able to collect 4 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals, thereby winning the overall championship this year. The team showed their rowing strength at the men’s and women’s knuckle four category, as well as at the women’s eight by winning 3 gold medals. During the course of the event, the general group made up of faculty and staff members of UNIST, has also earned ten medals — 5 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze at both the indoor and outdoor rowing races.

“I would like to personally thank all the members of UNIST rowing club for their tireless efforts, as well as the dedicated coaching staffs and UNIST for their support, says Jihyang Lee, who is currently in her fourth year of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in the school of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UNIST.

“I am extremely proud of the whole team,” says Yangsang Han (UNIST Leadership Center), who joined the team’s coaching staff in May of this year. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t win all the rowing events in this year’s tournament, but UNIST Rowing Club has a very strong squad and excellent training facilities, rivaling the Oxford University Boat Club in its potential for growth.”

The UNIST Rowing Club is a registered club, established in 2013 with the aim of nurturing human resources in science and technology who have a cooperative spirit, strong physical strength, and excellent leadership skills. Open to anyone interested in the sport of rowing, the club currently consists of 80 members and is still growing. The club also boasts 6 racing boats and 1 rescue boat. The primary objectives of the club are to foster and promote the sport of rowing at all levels.

The club earned their first ever victory in the 9th Busan Metropolitan City Mayor Cup National Rowing Competition in 2016. In addition, the team has been honored with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Award at the 43th Jang Bogo Flag National Rowing Championship in July, 2017. They have also won the overall competition at the 2nd Changwon City Rowing Competition in April, 2018.
